Thoughts on Bingley -- part 2 -- Chapter 3

Bingley arrives at the ball and is quickly overshadowed by his handsome and wealthy friend, Mr. Darcy. However, disagreeable Darcy is no more than introduced (as disagreeable), and the spotlight of popularity quickly shifts back to the much more agreeable Bingley.

The two men are pictures in contrast. Bingley is lively and agreeable; Darcy walks around the room, "speaking occasionally" to one of his own party, standing (according to Bingley) "stupidly" by himself. Bingley dances with everyone, and particularly with Jane Bennet; Darcy detests dancing, and particularly (and decisively) declines the opportunity to dance with Jane's sister Elizabeth.
