Thoughts on Chapter 5

In this chapter, the Bennet women engage with their friends, the Lucases, in a "post-game" analysis of the ball at Meryton. Two items of importance are highlighted: Mr. Bingley's admiration of Jane Bennet ("though it may all come to nothing, you know"), and the overall "disagreeability" of Mr. Darcy.

The woman recall how freely Bingley spoke with others about Jane Bennet's beauty - not to mention (once again) that he twice asked her to dance.

From Darcy, in contrast, polite conversation could only be extracted by making him cross; and in further contrast, Darcy's slight towards "tolerable" Elizabeth - by refusing to ask her to dance - illustrates his proud, disagreeable nature.
